Introduction

Arahanthgiri Jain Math, also known as the Tirumalai Jain Complex, is a highly revered and historic Digambar Jain pilgrimage site in South India, located in the Tiruvannamalai district of Tamil Nadu. Believed to be more than 2,000 years old, this complex stands as a living symbol of Tamil Jain culture and its rich spiritual heritage. According to Jain tradition, the last Shrutakevali, Acharya Bhadrabahu Swami, stayed and practiced penance on this sacred hill along with his large sangha (assembly of monks). Adorned with natural caves, ancient inscriptions, and architectural art, this monastery has for centuries been a major centre for the self-realization and exchange of knowledge among Jain Shramanas (monks). The most prominent feature of this sacred shrine is the massive 16.25-foot-high monolithic (rock-cut) statue of Lord Neminatha located on the hill, which holds the distinction of being the tallest Jain statue in Tamil Nadu. In addition, this hilltop complex houses three ancient caves and four grand temples dating back to the Chola, Pallava, and Vijayanagara dynasties, preserving exquisite murals (paintings) and Tamil-Brahmi inscriptions from the 11th to the 16th centuries. Due to its unique architecture, historical significance, and serene atmosphere, Arahanthgiri Jain Math is not only a center of deep faith for Jain devotees but also an invaluable heritage for researchers of Indian archaeology and art.
